I think there's a process you just have to go through to stop thinking of them as RATS and all the little preconceived notions you have about them, and start seeing them as the fun, intelligent, wonderful pets that they make. . .

. . .The ratties are doing wonderful. I couldn't believe how much they'd grown in the week we were gone! They are so much fun to have. Their personalities are so different. Joshua is definitely the adventurous one, Corran is hilarious and Ranger would rather be on your shoulder than anywhere else. Corran's coat has lightened since we got him, and Ranger's has darkened, especially on his nose. They are all so cute! I just adore them.

Right now they are in my room, but we may have to move them into the den. I love having them there, but Jeremy has a tendency to wake me up EARLY in the morning or late at night to see his rat, and mom wants them to be more accessible to her, too. We'll see.

Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful animals with us. They are a joy and a blessing to have. I'm trying to figure out how to hook my digital camera up to this computer, and when I do, I'll be sure to send you some pictures. Have a great New Year!

Elisabeth, thank you for the adorable sweet little man I adopted from you...he is just about the most docile little guy in the world. I love him so~

(From Simon) Hi Mom, thanks for giving me such a great start and for loving me enough to let me go to my new mom!!~Simon~

The boys are all doing fine, we have moved the babies in with the big boys and everything is going okay. They are soooo much fun!!! I can't tell you how much we all enjoy them. They are really sweet! I think you said you wanted a list of everyone and their names, so here goes: Tino--Siamese, Snoopy--beige husky, Merl--pearl merle, Zorro--blue blaze, Nipper--rex dalmatian dumbo, Simon--supposed to be siamese, points not showing (beige), Bear--black dumbo, Templeton--agouti dumbo. Wow! Just think, a few months ago we didn't even have one. Rats are like potato chips, you just can't have one.

I will keep in touch, may know someone who is looking for a rat. I told them they could not possibly find cuter rats anywhere!!

Later--Lori
Well, Simon doesn't do much playing anymore but the 2 little boys make up for that! Todd loves watching "wrestling time"--they are so funny! What is really funny is when Dewey (the dumbo) is the one who instigates the playtime...he looks so sad, but when he starts to bounce around you know he is happy!! And they do love to pile together at bedtime...I just love them!

Dewey and Stuart are such dolls!!

Oh, Malcolm is just wonderful. He and I have been spending a lot of time together. He spent a great deal of time with me on the couch this weekend, reading the newspaper and watching television! He loves to snuggle and have the area behind his ears scratched. (He was grinding his teeth for me after I got him home on Saturday. He was sitting on my shoulder and was just letting me scratch his neck....before I knew it, he was making those wonderful grinding noises of contentment!!)

and, here in my cage,
are three brand new Ratlets,
6 and 10 weeks in age.

Their cheeks are so fuzzy,
their coats smooth and shiny,
and compared to my old boys,
they're impossibly tiny.

The old guys, Abe and Benny,
behind rat room door,
are little suspecting
the changes in store.

While I stare for hours
at these creatures I've gotten;
these wonderful babies
from the rattery "Spoiled Ratten."

The oldest is white, with
black marks 'round each eye.
I'm calling him Minstrel:
my "performing arts" guy.

One brother is black with
a blaze on his noodle
and white sides and belly--
I've named this boy Bugle.

His sibling is fearless,
a little black chummy.
I'm calling him Button, for
the white spot on his tummy.

Hey, Minstrel! Hey, Bugle...
Hey, Button, come back here!
Your mom wants to scritch
your soft cheeks and each black ear!

They all are so cuddly,
my sweet little men.
They've made me so happy--
soon, too, Abe and Ben.

And, if you listen real close
as I close the cage door,
you'll hear me exclaim,
"They're perfect! I want more!"

(Excerpt from Julie's post on 'the ratlist' on March 23, 2002, edited for length) - Minstrel, the oldest of my three boys, is a year old today! Some of you may remember how, last spring, I was debating whether to pick a boy from Min's litter. I'd wanted three ratlets (from Spoiled Ratten Rattery in Kansas City) who would all be about 6 weeks old when I picked them up in early June. Unfortunately, there were only two available boys from the correctly timed litter, so I had to adjust my plans. The available babies in Min's litter were adorable, but I feared that they would be too old, at ten weeks (14 after quarantine), to introduce easily to my fragile 2-year olds (Abe and Benny, both gone now).

Well, I decided to take a chance, and my niece and nephew helped me pick this adorable ratlet with black "jester"-ish markings on his face . I have never regretted that decision for a second. Min is an angel. His face is constantly alive with intelligence and curiosity. He brings me joy every day, and I feel so lucky to have him. Happy birthday, Min-Min!

You can see pictures of Min with his buddies here:
At six weeks, at four months, and at seven months
I'll try to take some more pictures today at Min's birthday party!

I was very impressed with the love and care ratties receive at Spoiled Ratten Rattery. My Misha and Ellie were great additions to my small rattie population. They are loveable and sweet and just absolutely wonderful! I look forward to adding to our family with another SRR baby soon!

I adopted two lil' boys from you a few months ago (a beige hooded and a mink variberk, I think). I just wanted to let you know that both of them are doing great. My entire family loves them, they are such sweet and loving critters.

I also wanted to give you the good news that I (along with the ratties) am going to be working at the Renaissance Festival this fall. My part is a Rat Sister. *giggle* Basically, I'll be standing around in rags in the middle of the woods, singing the praises of rats to complete strangers. Sounds like fun to me. And I get to talk in a funny accent. All the better.

Sarah
I just wanted to tell you that Emmy and Pearl are doing just great. I love them so much! Emmy gives you kisses every time you get close to her. Pearl is just a doll; she is the first one that comes to the cage every morning when I feed them. She also has been doing great when I give her a bath. . . Emmy, on the other hand, scratches up my arm to try to get out of the sink! I just wanted to let know how they are doing.

Vicki

Vicki loves the rats. Pearl we thought was the shy one, but she is not anymore and she is quite the climber. Emmy (Emerald) is a shoulder rider. Both love to be held and love to eat. If we do not watch it we will have some very fat rats. We used your recommended recipe and they love most of it, especially the Cheerios and oats.

Vicki made the comment that she picked the best rats.

Thank you,
Anita

Those three ratties that I got from you are hilarious! They are definitely teaching Dumbalina some things!!LOL All four go to the door when I go in to feed them. And I better plan on letting them run around the room for awhile! At first, it was only Sally and then Tabitha or Hara. Now, all four are at the door and waiting. Sally and Tabitha are the two that give the bunny and gp's heart attacks! They want so much to be close to them. Hara went to the bunny and just laid by her, and the bunny let her and even looked like she was grooming her. The ratties love to climb anything and everything, and I swear they try to give me a heart attack! Sometimes I think they are going to fall and get hurt, and they are just fine. One day I was missing a rat and finally looked in the closet, and there was Sally curled up on some extra blankets! (Of course, they have lots of t-shirts and socks in their house for their nest!) They are just the sweetest!!! If you ever need me to tell someone how tame your rats are, I'll be glad to do so! Some of my co-workers can't believe the stories I tell them about these girls. One of them said "how did you get her so tame?" I said, "she came to me that way!" They are absolutely wonderful! Not one has even tried to bite me....just nibbled on my fingers when they smelled food. They are really just the best! Dumbalinie is back to her outgoing self and will let me pick her up. Shortly after your three came home, she was fine. I really think it was hard on her to lose both ratties and be alone. Getting her some roommates was the best idea!!!

JoAnn

I cannot thank all of YOU enough for the wonderful notes you have sent, the stories, the photos, and of course, the praise. Without you, the people who love and adore rats like we do, rat breeders would have a tough time being able to produce beautiful litters. You see, it would take a very long time to accomplish our goals-to breed better rats as pets. By taking our sweet pups into your home, you make it possible for us to breed another litter. By keeping in touch with us and letting us know how your ratties are doing throughout their lives, you provide valuable information on how we are doing with regard to their health, their temperaments, longevity. . .

I want to especially thank those of you who take the time to find a breeder you want to work with, rather than settling for just any animal from a pet store, and for enduring my questions to be sure you are the right person to be owned by my ratties. Some of you have traveled great distances just to choose the perfect pets for you and your families. You help to spread the word about what great pets rats are. Thanks to you who wait patiently (well, as patiently as you can) for your ratties to be born and wean, watching their progress along with me and then updating me on how they are doing once they are home. You give your time, money and most of all, your heart to care for these special creatures. Without you and your input, your continued support, I couldn't do this right. And what's the point of doing something if you aren't going to do it right?!

-Elisabeth
