Have you hugged your rat today?

Spoiled Ratten is a hobby breeder of domesticated, or "fancy," rats located in Kansas City, Missouri. We breed for temperament and health first, but in the process of breeding sweet and healthy pets, we also get some that are show quality. We breed to the RSA standards for type and varieties, and we register our rats with the North American Rat Registry.

"We" is my family-me and my son, David. He helps out around here, but "I" is me, Elisabeth, aka Ratlady KC. I got my nickname from always being out and about with at least one rat on my shoulder-trying to spread the word about how great rats are as pets. It's a funny nickname, but I've gotten used to it and somewhat like it after all this time. David and I started with our first pet rat, Socrates (I never heard of or even saw the movie with the other rat of that name until 2005-what a surprise that was!), in 1992, and since then, we have discovered blue rats, dumbo rats, Siamese rats and many other types. We have now had rats for more than ten fun-filled years and have been breeding them since spring of 1999-can't imagine life without them!

While rats are all beautiful and special in their own ways, we are working for temperament, health and type, and we like to improve those traits on our specialties first, when we can. We specialize in color point (Siamese, sometimes Himalayan), Russian blue, black and Burmese. There are times when we might have agouti-based types or even a blue or chocolate in a litter, but these are not our specialties, and they won't happen often. Since we work with albino, we have to avoid beige and champagne, so those are not colors you will see "popping up" here.

As for body type, we breed both dumbo and standard-eared. We do not breed tailless rats, and have no plans to.

We do have rex and/or satin rats from time to time. We do not breed hairless, but there have been one or two in the program that carried it. That is generations back from where we are now.

We are members of several rat clubs, including Midwest Rat Enthusiasts (of which Elisabeth is an officer), and the rattery is registered with the NARR and the AFRMA with the initials "SRR." If you would like information about any of these clubs, you can find links in The Ratster. Of course, we register all of our rats with the NARR.

We'd love to hear from you if you have questions about pet rats, but please understand that the rats keep us very busy, and we don't have alot of free time. We will get back with you as soon as we can.
